Netanya Foraging Class

After long last, and upon request, I will finally be teaching a foraging class in Netanya. Learn all about the various wild edible plants that grow all around you, from edible seeds and spices to vegetables, fruit, and condiments, as well as which plants can be used for medicinal purposes. Nature will never look the same to you again, as weeds become "purslane" and "mustard" and "capers" and "lettuce" and you learn how to use each of them.

I have been teaching foraging classes for years already, blogs about frugal living at PennilessParenting.com and am currently writing two foraging books- one instructional about plant identification, and one with foraged recips.

This class will be on Friday, July 15th, at 8:30-10:30 am, at Seargent's grove in Netanya, and costs 40 shekel per person, 35 shekel if you bring a friend or if you prepay via paypal. Please arrive 15 minutes early, so that we can take care of payments and other official aspects beforehand, and then start the class on time.

Notes: Make sure to bring a hat and lots of water and dress weather appropriately, as it will be hot, despite starting early to try to beat the heat.

Chol Hamoed Foraging Classes for Families- In Efrat, Maaleh Adumim, and Jerusalem


Looking for something fun to do with your family on Chol Hamoed, maybe something different and/or naturey, and not too expensive?

If you're in Jerusalem, Gush Etzion, or Maaleh Adumim, or the general area- come to Ronit Peskin's foraging class for families, where we'll explore the nature around and learn which plants can be used for food, which have first aid and medicinal properties, and which ones are poisonous. Special family pricing- 35/40 shekel per adult, 30/35 if you bring a friend, 5 shekel per kid ages 5-9, 10 shekel per kid 10 and up, with a maximum price of 85/90 shekel per family (parents and their kids only, no extras), 75/80 if you bring another family. (When two prices are listed, the first price listed is the Jerusalem price and the second price for classes outside Jerusalem.) If you've attended a previous foraging class, you get a 10 shekel discount for this class.
Individuals are welcome to attend- this is not exclusively for families.


Foraging is a fun activity the whole family can enjoy, from toddlers to senior citizens. The trips will be stroller friendly (over rougher terrain, but still a stroller can be pushed).

Added bonus- no need to worry because your kid ate something that might be poisonous- your kid will know what is poisonous and what they can eat, and you will know too!

(Rabbinical guidance will be followed, so as to not be over issurim of chol hamoed.)

Upcoming Scheduled Classes Around The Country!

There are lots of classes coming up- all over the country!

Here are the following dates and locations for the upcoming classes:


  • Wednesday, March 9th at 10 am- Class in the Ramot Forest, in Jerusalem. We meet outside Gan HaShablul, at the corner of Yigal Alon and Aliyat Hanoar streets. Costs 35 shekel, 30 if you bring a friend. 5 shekel discount per person for prepay via paypal. Vegan foraged mehadrin gluten free and healthy bento boxes available for 35 shekel each.   • For those who requested a Friday date in the Jerusalem area- Friday, April 1st, at 10 am, there will be a foraging class in Jerusalem, in Gan Sacher- meeting point is outside Kraft soccer field.   • A Modiin class in the evening has been scheduled for April 6, at 5 pm at Givat Titora, after the last successful class there had people who are unable to come because of commitments during the work day.   • A hiking/foraging class in the Lifta in Jerusalem, to learn about plants that you won't find on most of my other classes, as the Lifta class is combined with a water hike. Limited space and for experienced/fit hikers only. Will be in the morning, around 9:30 am, and within walking distance of Tachana Merkazit in Jerusalem.
  • A foraging class in the Wadi in Maaleh Adumim.
  • A foraging class in the Gush Etzion region.
  • A foraging class in the Karnei Shomron area.
  • A foraging class in Beit El.

Yesterday there was an awesome turnout to the foraging class in Modiin, and I've been requested to come back and teach there again, but at a time that works for people that are busy during the day.

Modiin Class Scheduled!

Are you interested in learning about foraging, but don't live in the Jerusalem area so you can't make it to my regular classes?

On Monday, February 29, at 10 am, we will be having a foraging class in Modiin!

Exact location to be determined, but most likely the southern hills, at the corner of Begin and Esther Hamalka street.

This class will cost only 40 shekel for 2 hours jam packed with useful information, and only 35 shekel if you bring a friend.

He found this plant growing near the soccer field, and he loves black nightshade and was excited to find it.

Yesterday's Foraging Trip in Jerusalem

Yesterday, I decided to head to Jerusalem to take photographs for my upcoming foraging book. There was one plant in particular I was after, the elusive dock, also known as sorrel, called חומעה in Hebrew. I regularly see it in Gan Sacher, but, unfortunately, it grows in an area that is regularly mowed, so the leaves never get large, and I would be suspicious of any plant growing in a mowed area, since it is more likely to have been sprayed with chemicals.

The one other place I'd seen dock growing in Jerusalem was in Giva Tzorfatit years ago, and my friend Amanda confirmed that she still saw it growing there within the past couple of days, and even told me precisely where she saw it, so I knew that would be my destination.

Having gotten ready for Shabbat early, I took the kids with me to the city, and got off at the stop near Givat Hatachmoshet, but before we could hop on the light rail to Giva Tzorfatit, we stopped at this green patch right next to Ramat Eshkol, to photograph and pick wood sorrel. I have to admit, I only recently learned that, despite its common nickname in Israel, חמצוצים- the official Hebrew name of wood sorrel is actually חמציץ. Hence the importance of scientific names, because then there is no confusion.

The plants were all wet- I'm not sure if from dew or rain, but the snails were out in full force and our feet got wet traipsing through the tall plants.

Foraging Class and Cooking Demonstration For Incredibly Busy People

New foraging classed scheduled- the next one is designed with busy people in mind!

Here's some info on it!:

Have you heard about foraging, about picking wild edibles, and been interested in the money saving and healthy aspects, but you are very busy, either with a busy work schedule, parenting, or simply with life, and do not have the time to dedicate to foraging, not only for learning how to forage, but also you don't have time to spend hours foraging, or lots of time preparing and cooking the foraged plants?

This foraging class for incredibly busy people is created with you in mind. Ronit Peskin, of PennilessParenting.com, homeschooling mom of 4, is certainly busy with her kids and cannot spend hours every day traipsing through the forest to fill her pantry, so has become an expert in streamlining the process of foraging to fit her busy life, and will be passing on this knowledge to you. This condensed class will contain 3 parts:
1) An abbreviated foraging class with a focus on plants that yield the largest volume in the smallest amount of time, including tips on how to seamlessly fit foraging into your packed schedule
2) Tips and demonstrations on how to wash and bug check this produce quickly.
3) Preparing two easy, quick, tasty, and healthy dishes with the plants foraged. (All badatz ingredients, gluten free, and vegan.)

This is an incredible class, the likes of which have not been seen before, and it will only cost 55 shekel to attend, 45 shekel if you bring a friend. If you've attended a previous foraging class of Ronit's, this class will only cost 35 shekel.

Since this class is geared towards busy people, many of whom are parents, kids ARE welcome, free, and they can learn a lot as well!

Class starts at 3:00 pm, promptly (please be considerate of everyone's time, and if you aren't 100% sure when you'll arrive, aim to arrive at 2:45 since we will not be waiting), and we meet outside the public restrooms in Gan Sacher.

Garland Chrysanthemums in Netivot and Elsewhere


Last night I was in Netivot for my brother's Henna party, and while we were walking to the hall from the bus stop, I saw a lot filled with an insane amount of wild edibles, including lots and lots of garland chrysanthemums, known in Hebrew as chartzit atura, חרצית עטורה. It's scientific name is glebionis coronaria, and it used to be known as chrysanthemum coronarium.

I must admit, one of the biggest reasons I love traveling around the country is getting to see plants that I don't get to see where I live.

I was really excited to see it, since I don't see these edible chrysanthemums in the places I generally am in, not in Kochav Yaakov, and not in Jerusalem (Gan Sacher, Ramot, town, Geula, Machane Yehuda area)- though I have seen them near Ein Karem (and I always see them growing along the roads when traveling to the Tel Aviv area). I had half a mind to pick some of them and bring them with me to the Henna party and afterwards with me home, but I knew my husband would think I was being ridiculous, to insist on shlepping wild greens to a fancy party and then back home on a bus with 4 kids...

Great Foraging Class Yesterday!

On Friday, February 5th, we had a nice sized crowd come enjoy the beautiful weather in Gan Sacher in Jerusalem, while learning about nearly 30 different edible and medicinal plants and how to use them!

You, Too, Can Learn To Forage

When most people look around and see greenery, they assume it is all grass, or weeds. But what most people don't know is that the vast majority of the plants growing in Israel are edible. In a patch the size of a basketball court you can often easily find over 15 different edible and medicinal plants!
